Selection process information

Terms and conditions.

Welcome to the Mentored Airline Pilot Scheme and Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) course run in conjunction with Thomas Cook Airlines – one of the most recognisable names in travel and one of the biggest leisure Airlines in the UK.

The Mentored scheme has been developed with our training partner, FTEJerez, to provide an opportunity for pilots to be pre-selected pilots to fly our Airbus fleet. You will undertake training through the ATPL route to the right hand seat of a Thomas Cook A321. This course has been specifically designed to teach you all of the key elements necessary for you to successfully transition to a Thomas Cook flight deck.

During your training in Jerez, you will be mentored throughout the course by an experienced Thomas Cook Airlines Liaison Pilot. After completion of the ATPL syllabus in Jerez, students will undergo an Airbus Type-Rating course.

Selection will follow the usual format and aptitude assessment, which is detailed below. The top candidates will be offered positions on the course, to commence training at Jerez in October 2019.

Thomas Cook Airlines and FTEJerez have also announced, for the second year, a Scholarship inspired by Raymonde de Laroche – the first female in the world to hold an aeroplane pilots licence. The scholarship is open for female applicants to be trained at FTEJerez as part of this Training Programme and further information is detailed below.

May I take this opportunity to wish you every success with your application and the selection process. I look forward to flying with you on a Thomas Cook aircraft in the future.

Captain Malcolm Sutherland

Director of Flight Operations
Thomas Cook Airlines

The Mentored Airline Pilot Scheme is well established as a Thomas Cook Airlines / FTEJerez cooperative program for low hour entry to Thomas Cook Airlines. This is a great opportunity for people who want to be involved in working in a fast paced, hi-tech airline that offers significant opportunities and benefits to its staff.

The Thomas Cook Group Airline operates aircraft from the Airbus and Boeing families, which offer a combination of speed, comfort and fuel economy.

We are looking for high calibre, motivated individuals who are keen to work for one of Europe’s leading leisure airlines.

To be eligible for this scheme you must have a minimum of 2 A-Level passes, Grade C or above (or equivalent), and have 5 GSCE passes including Maths, English and a Science subject at Grade C or above, as well as the right to live and work in the UK and the EU.

International equivalents will be accepted, for reference please check the UCAS International Qualifications guide.

If successful, you will have to fund FTE’s ATPL programme.

The price for this course is EUR €119,000

The price is inclusive of the following:

  • Accommodation and Full Board
  • Full uniform (except shoes)
  • 1st attempt, ground and flying EASA exams
  • Renewal of the EASA Class One Medical
  • All training material
  • Landing and navigation fees
  • Free Internet access
  • No additional accommodation charge in the unlikely event of delay in training due to adverse weather
  • VAT

Throughout the training, the Thomas Cook student’s performance will not only be monitored by FTE’s training team, but there will also be an oversight by Thomas Cook’s assigned liaison Pilot.

If successful throughout the training at FTEJerez, and First Officer positions available, no further selection will be required by Thomas Cook and you will flow straight into an A321 type rating course. This type-rating costs will be met by Thomas Cook Airlines. Once the type-rating is completed, there is a three-year bond and will start on a 7 month-on / 5 month-off permanent contract for the first year.

This programme coincides with the announcement of a Scholarship inspired by Raymonde de Laroche, a Thomas Cook Airlines and FTEJerez joint initiative to attract female pilots to the profession.

The scholarship is open for female applicants to be trained at FTEJerez as part of the Thomas Cook Airlines Mentored Cadet Pilot Training Programme. One scholarship of 30,000€ (thirty thousand Euros) will be awarded to a successful female applicant to be applied towards her training costs at FTEJerez.

Candidates will be able to apply starting 24th May 2019.

When applying, you will be required to create a user name and password. With this information, you will be given access to a personal Candidate Area, where you can complete your application.

Should you meet the initial criteria you will be given access to a series of questions that must be answered from your Candidate Area within the specified period.

Should your application be successful in progressing to the next phase you will be required to travel, at your own expense, to Thomas Cook’s training facility in Manchester. Currently, this one-day selection phase is expected to take place on the second week of July 2019.

The final element of the selection process will be a Thomas Cook airline interview. This will, once again, take place in Manchester in early August 2019.

Throughout the selection process, you will be advised as to whether or not your application has progressed to the next stage. However, due to the large number of applications, neither Thomas Cook nor FTEJerez will be in a position to give individual detailed feedback on your performance.
