Selection process information

Terms and conditions.

Welcome to the Mentored Airline Pilot Scheme and Multi-crew Pilots Licence (MPL) course run in conjunction with Flybe, Europe’s largest and most successful regional airline. I am Captain Mark Firth, Director of Flight Operations, charged by the airline to manage the recruitment of flight deck crews. The Mentored scheme has been developed with our training partner, FTEJerez, to provide a source of quality pre-selected pilots to crew our De Havilland Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. You will undertake training under the MPL route to the right hand seat of a Flybe Q400. This course has been specifically designed to teach you all of the key elements necessary for you to successfully transition to a Flybe flight deck.

Training in Jerez will have a duration of 58 weeks (13 months). During this time, your progress will be mentored throughout the course by the Flybe Liaison Pilot. As the final phase of this course, students will undergo a Flybe Q400 Type Rating course in Exeter, with a total duration of approximately 2 months.

Selection will follow the same format and battery of tests as in previous Flybe / FTEJerez schemes. Top candidates will be offered positions on the course to commence training at Jerez throughout 2020.

The prospects within the airline for pilot progression are excellent and allow for faster than average progress into the Commander’s seat.

May I take this opportunity to wish you every success with your application and the selection process.

Mark Firth

Director of Flight Operations

The Mentored Airline Pilot Scheme (MAPS) is well established as a Flybe / FTEJerez cooperative program for low hour entry to Flybe. This is a great opportunity for people who want to be involved in working in a fast paced, hi-tech airline that offers significant opportunities and benefits to its staff.

Flybe operate the De Havilland Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, which is a modern glass cockpit turboprop. The Q400 offers comfort for up to 78 passengers with a maximum cruise speed of 370 kts. Its combination of speed, comfort and fuel economy allows it to compete effectively with any jet on an airline route less than 500 miles (800 km).

We are looking for high calibre, motivated individuals who are keen to work for Europe’s largest regional airline.

To be eligible for this scheme you must have a minimum of 2 A-Level passes, Grade C or above (or equivalent), and have 5 GSCE passes including Maths, English and a Science subject at Grade 4/C or above, as well as the right to live and work in the UK and in the EU. International equivalents will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

In addition, you must not have applied for the Flybe MPL with FTEJerez or any other ATO in the past 6 months.

If successful you will have to fund FTE’s MPL programme.

The price for this course is GBP £92,500

The price is inclusive of the following:

  • Full-board accommodation (3 meals a day)
  • Full MPL course, including Advanced Stage on the Q400
  • FTEJerez cadet uniform (except shoes)
  • 1st attempt, ground and flying EASA exams
  • Renewal of the EASA Class One Medical
  • All training material
  • Landing and navigation fees
  • No additional accommodation charge in the unlikely event of delay in training due to adverse weather
  • VAT

Throughout the training, the Flybe student’s performance will not only be monitored by FTE’s training team, but there will also be an oversight by Flybe’s assigned liaison Pilot.

If successful throughout the training at FTEJerez, and First Officer positions available, no further selection will be required by Flybe and you will flow straight into a Q400 type rating course as a part of the MPL training.

Candidates will be able to apply starting from 22nd November.

When applying, you will be required to create a user name and password. With this information, you will be given access to a personal Candidate Area, where you can complete your application.

Should you meet the initial criteria, you will be able to complete your application by submitting the required documents and answering an online questionnaire. Please note that the application must be completed within 5 days, starting with the first submission.

Should your application be successful in progressing to the next phase you will be required to travel, at your own expense, to Flybe’s headquarters in Exeter to undertake the FTEJerez Assessment Stage. Currently, this one-day selection phase is expected to take place in the first months of 2020. Please note that this stage will be carried out following FTE’s Assessment Policy. There is no charge for the Assessment in Exeter.

The final element of the selection process will be a Flybe airline interview. This will, once again, take place in Exeter following FTE’s Assessment Stage.

Throughout the selection process, you will be advised as to whether or not your application has progressed to the next stage. However, due to the large number of applications, neither Flybe nor FTEJerez will be in a position to give individual detailed feedback on your performance.
